The Untold Stories of the Children of Windrush. AFRUCA Windrush Day Event

AFRUCA Windrush Day Event in Manchester will put the spotlight on the impact of migratory story of Windrush on two generations of children. There has been little focus on children of migrant Windrush parents who went through a range of experiences in their new lives in the UK. Some were left behind in the Caribbean by their parents before family reunification in the UK, hence experienced the trauma of separation. Many of these children also experienced follow up/additional trauma as adults based on UK government policies of denial, detention and deportation. Their own children are also experiencing trauma because of their parents experiences. These generational traumatic experiences have resulted in family separation (again), lack of appropriate parental care/guidance and male role modelling, leading to other issues including involvement in gangs, negative male role model/grooming, child criminal exploitation and child sexual exploitation, pushing children into the child protection and criminal/youth justice systems. Certainly, it is crucial that the experiences of children across the Windrush generations are celebrated, explored and documented for future generations.
